What to look for in diagnostic software for a repair shop

What a repair shop should expect a diagnostic report to check, and what PMV's diagnostic platform plans include at each tier.

In short

Diagnostic software for a repair shop should run a fixed set of checks on a machine, score the results against rules, and produce a report a customer can read. PMV Digital's diagnostic platform does this with a Starter plan at $199 a month, a Professional plan at $499 a month with a bootable USB and multi-location support, and an Enterprise plan at $1,499 a month with white-label branding. Extra locations are $149 a month and weekly one-on-one training is $299 a month.

A customer drops off a laptop that shuts down at random. A technician opens it, runs a quick look, and says the fan is probably the problem. The customer wants to know what "probably" means before they pay for a new fan. Diagnostic software for a repair shop exists to answer that question: run a fixed set of checks, score the results, and hand over a report instead of a guess.

What diagnostic software for a repair shop actually does

A diagnostic platform is not a single test. It is a rule engine: a set of checks for battery health, drive health, memory, temperature, and other common failure points, each with a pass or fail threshold. The technician runs the diagnostic once, and the platform turns the raw numbers into a report with plain language, not a column of codes only the technician understands. That report can go to the customer by email, sit in the shop's own records, or back up a quote for a repair.

The three plans, and what changes between them

PMV Digital's diagnostic platform is sold in three tiers, each billed monthly or at a yearly rate.

  • Starter, $199 a month or $1,999 a year: up to 20 diagnostics a month, the full rule engine, PDF reports, email support, one location.
  • Professional, $499 a month or $4,999 a year: unlimited diagnostics, a bootable USB, a few custom rules, a tech dashboard, phone support, up to 3 locations.
  • Enterprise, $1,499 a month or $14,999 a year: adds white-label branding, a dedicated support engineer, unlimited locations, and a custom uptime promise.

A single shop running a modest volume of diagnostics a month can stay on Starter. A shop that is close to the 20-diagnostic cap, or that wants a bootable USB and a tech dashboard, is the case Professional is built for. Enterprise is for an operation running diagnostics under its own brand name across many locations, with a dedicated engineer on the other end if something in the rule engine needs attention.

Why the bootable USB matters

Not every machine that comes in for diagnostics will boot into its own operating system. A drive can be failing badly enough that the system never reaches a desktop, and that is often exactly the case a customer wants answered. The bootable USB, included on the Professional and Enterprise plans, runs the diagnostic from outside the installed operating system, so a technician can still get a report on a machine that will not start normally. A diagnostic USB on its own is also available at $50 each, or $40 each at 10 or more, for a shop that wants spares on hand for multiple technicians.

Running diagnostics across more than one location

A shop with a second or third location does not need a separate diagnostic setup at each one. Professional covers up to 3 locations under one plan, and Enterprise covers unlimited locations. A shop that grows past its plan's included locations can add one for $149 a month rather than moving up a full tier. The tech dashboard on Professional and Enterprise gives an owner a single place to see diagnostics run across every location, instead of checking each shop separately.

Getting a team actually using the rule engine

A diagnostic platform is only as useful as the habit of running it on every machine that comes in, and a rule engine with a few custom rules is only useful if the team knows how to read what it flags. PMV Digital's training option is weekly one-on-one coaching at $299 a month, aimed at a shop that wants its technicians comfortable running diagnostics and reading the reports without guesswork, rather than a shop that just wants the software installed and left alone.

Diagnostics is one part of running a repair shop's own systems

A diagnostic platform answers questions about the machines a shop repairs. It does not answer questions about the shop's own computers, point-of-sale system, or network, which fail just like any other machine does. For that side of the business, see our piece on server monitoring for small business, which covers what an agent-based monitoring tool checks and alerts on.

Diagnostic software is one line on PMV Digital's tech services page, alongside quick fixes, website and payment fixes, server and SSL or DNS work, and Discord bot repair, all quoted as starting prices with the final price confirmed before any work begins. A shop that wants to see where its diagnostic volume and location count fit against the three plans above can request a quote directly from that page.
